Summary and Scope

Geotechnical engineering is closely related to a wide range of engineering disciplines such as Rock, Hydraulic, Road, Railway, Petroleum, and Mining Engineering, dealing with engineering problems on geotechnical properties, ground-structure interaction and dynamic response(impact effect, seismic response, vibratory action, etc.). Relying on fundamental principles of rock, soil and concrete mechanics, Geotechnical engineering underpins the design, construction and operation of all kinds of engineering projects including slopes, dams, retaining walls and shallow, deep foundations, mining, tunneling, etc.

A challenge that has been faced by geotechnical engineers is the complex nonlinearity in terms of (geotechnical) material nonlinearity, geometric nonlinearity and nonlinear boundary conditions. And the dynamic response process also is one of the highly nonlinear problems. Many highly nonlinear engineering problems are beyond the capabilities of the traditional analytical and closed-form approaches; either low- or over-estimated results have been found in many cases where tradition solutions were imposed in analyses. On the contrary, numerical simulation has become an efficient tool and widely appreciated by geotechnical researchers. In particularly, with the development of numerical methods (such as DEM, FEM, DEM, meshless method (SPH, MPM), etc.) and high performance computing technologies, more complicated virtual models that are closer to real world could be efficiently established and processed, generating more reliable results for geotechnical design and assessment.

This special issue therefore emphasizes the important roles of nonlinearity and numerical simulation in Geotechnical Engineering, and demonstrates the latest efforts of global researchers. About 50 high-quality peer reviewed papers will be selected to publish in this special issue, and a broad range of submissions in theories, experiments techniques, numerical methods and engineering projects is welcomed.

The list of possible topics includes, but is not limited to:

  • Geotechnical engineering stability analysis under dynamic loading (such as impact loading, seismic action, vibratory action, etc.);
  • Mechanical behavior of rock/soil/concrete under complex hydrogeology and engineering geology condition;
  • Mechanical behavior of rock/soil/concrete under nonlinear stress environment
  • New constitutive models for complex rock/soil/concrete;
  • New numerical methods applications in complex rock/soil/concrete;
  • New observations for dynamic response process in geotechnical engineering, such as high-speed photography, particle image velocimetry, digital image correlation, etc.;
  • New data acquisition systems for vibration monitoring;
  • New support technology for complex rock/soil/concrete, such as 3D print, transparent soil, high performance concrete, etc.;
  • Rock/soil/concrete stability/reliability analysis under vibrations loads;
  • Case Study for nonlinearity, complex, dynamic and serious geotechnical engineering accident (slopes, dams, retaining walls and shallow, deep foundations, mining, tunneling, etc.)
